The Top 5 Tips for Online Students

Liane - successTaking some, or all, of your classes online can seem like a daunting task for some students. From computer requirements to internet firewalls, there are plenty of things to consider before jumping into the world of online education. But don’t worry; even though online classes are in a different learning environment, you are still learning the same concepts that you would learn in a traditional brick-and-mortar school.

So for those of you who are, or are considering, taking classes online, here are five tips to help you be successful in your online courses.

5. Your computer must be this tall to ride – Before you register for classes, make sure the computer you are using has all the correct programs installed to complete the course. You can check the computer requirements section on your school’s website to see which programs you need.

4. The pen (or keyboard) is mightier – Always take notes. As you go through the lessons, it is helpful to write or type notes to summarize what you have learned. Try and jot down the important parts and info from each lesson. That way, you can study more efficiently and effectively for your exams.

3. Be the tortoise, not the hare – You don’t always have to rush through the lessons and exams. Most times, when students rush, they make several mistakes that could have easily been avoided if they simply slowed down. So be sure to think things through and take your time. Just like former UCLA Basketball coach John Wooden always said, “Be quick, but don’t hurry.”

2. Time’s a wastin’ – If you are taking classes from home, it is a good idea to set up a time solely for your school work. In this day and age of Xbox Live, Facebook, and DVRs, distractions are bountiful. So set up a time where you can turn off your Xbox, log off of Facebook, and pause your DVR, and focus on completing your school work. This will help you stay on pace in your courses and not fall behind.

1. Give me a break – Perhaps the most important thing to remember is to take a short break while you are working on your classes. If you are online in your courses for more than a couple of hours at a time, take a quick 10-15 minute break every hour to step away from the computer. Take a walk, do a couple exercises, or any physical activity you want. This will help you stay energized and allow you to better focus on your school work.

If you follow these steps, you should be well on your way to successfully completing your online course. And remember, if you need help, don’t hesitate to call or email your instructor. They’re here to help. If you have any other tips that might help online students, please leave a comment below.
